Introduction

Rotavirus is the common cause of gastroenteritis and can cause serious disease especially in infants. Rotavirus majorly breeds in fall and winter, but cases seen in all seasons.

Transmission

The rotavirus transmission is commonly through food consumption, and some are commonly spreaded by sneezing, coughing, and talking.

Symptom

1. There is an incubation period about 1-3 days before symptoms appear. The beginning of symptoms will be low-grade fever, then vomiting will appear for about 1-2 days.

2. The rotavirus will destruct villi in small intestines and decrease enzyme production in human digestion system thus causing symptoms followed by diarrhea and will last about 5-7 days.

3. Dehydration occurs if serious symptoms of diarrhea last. Symptoms such as spasm and shock will appear if a child is serious infected by rotavirus.

Treatment

There is no specific treatment on rotavirus infection. Most importantly, maintaining sufficient water to prevent dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. For those having low-grade symptoms, supply suitable measurement of glucose or feed breast milk. For bigger infants, you may feed them with some light food, such as porridge and white toast.

Prevention

1. Wash hands with soaps frequently. Watch kids keep away from virus infected food or toys.

2. Avoid appearing in public area. Make segregation at home if found rotavirus infected.

3. Take vaccines, two vaccines against rotavirus were shown to be safe and effective in children: RotaTeq and RotaRix.

4. Supply suitable measurement of probiotics to kill rotavirus and increase body resistance.
