Blue green algae have existed on earth for more than thirty five billion years. They appear in fresh water, salt water, land, hot springs, and even desserts. Microalgae has great adaptation to its surroundings, which gives it competitive power to survive, and can photosynthesis in the worst environments.
Blue green algae can exist in the form of single-celled, filamentous or groups in water. A single cell can be 1 micrometer in size, and a filamentous can be a string of joint single cells, which can be measured up to more than 100 micrometers. When a group is found, it can contain up to 500 cells, large enough to be visible to the naked eye. Blue green algae may contain may contain various types of toxins and some species of microalgae which has a distinct fishy smell, such as Microcystis, Anabaena, column spore algae etc. The Mcrocystis and column spore algae create toxins that damage the liver, and the Anabaena creates neurotoxicity.
In the past 10 years, Microcystin and the toxins it creates has become the most important issue. Microcystin creates damage to the liver cells, and if consumed at a large quantity, it would create liver infection. Even if consumed at a small quantity and at a slower rate, no apparent signs of sickness will be visible, but will eventually evolve into cancer.
FEBICO's cultivation plant is located in Ping Tung, utilizing the sufficient sunlight from South of Taiwan and the natural spring water from Da-Wu mountain, combining it with the fresh clean air of the area to cultivate natural, non-toxic, easy to absorb microalgae.
